Culture Shift is a newsletter curated by the HuffPost Culture editors and writers.

This week we're talking about the benefits of watching TV, never-before-seen photographs of the Civil Rights Movement, cell phone etiquette at the theater, the novel every "Eternal Sunshine" fan will relish, and a sneak peek at Harper Lee's new book.

Never-Before-Seen Photos Bring The Story Of The Civil Rights Movement To Life

"Between 1964 and 1965, [Mary Elizabeth] King traveled with the Student Nonviolent Coordinating Committee through the Mississippi Delta, encountering the many men, women and children risking their jobs and their safety in the name of equality. 'These were individuals who had lessons for me,' she said. 'They were filled with wisdom. I was experiencing coming to understand the meaning of social power and I felt that I could use photography to convey that in a way I could not with words.'" (Read more here)

Watching TV Is Good For You

"There are plenty of studies stating the health risks of watching TV (and spending the grand majority of our lives sitting down, really). Certainly, if you'd like to avoid heart disease, running a mile is a safer bet than sitting down for an episode of 'The Bachelorette.' But in terms of the intellectual effects, as TV has gotten better, so has the experience of watching it. The golden age of TV doesn't just mean shows have improved. Watching TV has become good for you." (Read more here)

The Nipples Of Art History Get An Instagram-Friendly Makeover

"As art lovers know all too well, the art history canon is also subjected to censorship on social media, with boobies crafted by the greatest minds in art history deemed overly scandalous for Facebook, even hundreds of years after their creation. So, we've decided to tidy up these naughty archives, replacing the womanly nipples of yore with their masculine (and totally, obviously unobjectionable) counterparts." (Read more here)

Created by comic book artist Fiona Staples (who shaped the style of the popular 'Saga' series) and writer Mark Waid (who's spoken openly about gender roles and comics), its first issue features a slightly familiar-looking, denim jacket-donning redhead who's coping with his first big breakup." "What the hell kind of feral beasts are you becoming, America? Last night, Patti LuPone had to confiscate a woman's phone when she was texting in the front row of Lincoln Center Theater, and you know what? Patti LuPone is a goddamned American hero." (Read more here)

What Breaking Up On 'The Bachelorette' Reveals About Toxic Masculinity

bach

"Most of us, if pressed to recall the most embarrassing lows in our lives, would probably think back to awful breakups. The end of first love, especially, can bring out some shocking behavior in immature dumpees. We poured bleach on our now-ex's favorite old camp T-shirt, or we called sobbing five times a night for a week. We got pissed and told them they were never good enough for us anyway. For men on 'The Bachelorette,' all too often, the immediate response is chilling anger. " (Read more here)

"Ball's novel is an enthralling thought experiment that considers the value of memory versus the pain of grief. Fans of dystopian stories and themes involving memory will relish this magical novel." (Read more here)
