FEDERAL COURT UPHOLDS GAY MARRIAGE BANS IN FOUR STATES "The march toward gay marriage across the U.S. hit a roadblock Thursday when a federal appeals court upheld laws against the practice in four states, creating a split in the legal system that increases the chances the Supreme Court will step in to decide the issue once and for all. The cases decided were from Ohio, Michigan, Kentucky and Tennessee." Here's a map of where gay marriage stands across the country. [AP]

PENTAGON ACKNOWLEDGES CHEMICAL WEAPON INJURIES IN IRAQ "More than 600 American service members since 2003 have reported to military medical staff members that they believe they were exposed to chemical warfare agents in Iraq, but the Pentagon failed to recognize the scope of the reported cases or offer adequate tracking and treatment to those who may have been injured, defense officials say." BRAZEN PHILADELPHIA KIDNAPPER TOOK TEEN LAST MONTH "A month before Delvin Barnes grabbed a woman off the streets of Philadelphia, he hit a teen with a shovel in Virginia and stuffed her into a car's trunk, authorities say." Barnes allegedly told the teen he had kidnapped before. [CNN]

MEET THE SELF-IDENTIFIED BIN LADEN SHOOTER "In 15 years of dangerous missions — from midnight raids on al-Qaeda safe houses in Iraq to battling Somali pirates from the deck of a heaving Navy ship on the high seas — there had never been one so shadowed by dread. As Robert James O'Neill contemplated his jump from a helicopter into Osama bin Laden's private garden, he was positive it would be his last. 'I didn't think I would survive,' the former Navy SEAL said." Yet some military sources argue there's more to the story. [WaPo]

WHAT'S BREWING

KEIRA KNIGHTLEY DEMANDED TO POSE TOPLESS WITHOUT PHOTOSHOP "I've had my body manipulated so many times for so many different reasons, whether it's paparazzi photographers or for film posters. And that [shoot] was one of the ones where I said, 'OK, I'm fine doing the topless shot so long as you don't make them any bigger or retouch.' Because it does feel important to say, it really doesn't matter what shape you are." [People]

TINDER DATES, A BARTENDER'S PERSPECTIVE "Actually, there's this one guy who literally goes on a date every single night at one of my bars, and I know his drink progression order. They get stronger if the date's going well, and weaker if it's not. He starts with a beer, and tells his date, 'Oh this place is great!' He has almost the exact same conversation every night. It's kind of eerie." [Vice]

WHY EVERYONE CAN'T STOP TALKING ABOUT 'SERIAL' "Jobs at the mall, getting stoned, first heartbreaks, afternoons spent driving around, eccentric janitors: The details surrounding the case are all your super-standard parts of high school. Koenig's reporting plays with a theme found in so many true-crime stories: Behind the banal, everyday drama of an episode of Degrassi or John Hughes film is the potential for something far more sinister." WHAT DOES YOUR DATA SAY ABOUT YOU? "Your data is telling a story about you. Maybe the story's a good one: you vote at every election, you pay your bills on time, you do your job well and get to work on time each day. But there are now so many data brokers -- buyers and sellers of data -- that databases may be defaming you without you even knowing it." [HuffPost]
