Ujung Kulon National Park

Located at the extreme south-western tip of Java on the Sunda shelf, includes the Ujung Kulon peninsula and several offshore islands, and encompasses the natural reserve of Krakatau.

In addition to its natural beauty and geological interest – particularly for the study of inland volcanoes – it contains the largest remaining area of lowland rainforest on Java plain.

Several species of endangered plants and animals can be found there, the Javan rhinoceros being the most seriously under threat.

Taman Jaya

Taman Jaya is a very popular starting point for trekkers before exploring the Ujung Kulon National Park. The distance on the map (Google Map) and the time it takes to travel from Jakarta to Taman Jaya might be misleading. It certainly takes longer than that.

Even to most Jakartans the name Ujung Kulon sounds like a very remote and distant place and difficult to reach. Most prefer to escape until Carita or a bit further to Tanjung Lesung.

Important points (towns) along the route are:

Serang - Cilegon - Anyer - Carita - Labuan - Sumur - and Taman Jaya

One traffic "bottle neck" is in Cilegon. But recently the new "southern ringroad" allows traveller to bypass the Cilegon city from Cilegon Timur toll exit to Anyer (Cikoneng).

A detailed narrative about getting there can be found here.
