- Street battles raged in Gaza City with Hamas fighters using tunnels to ambush Israeli forces. Residents said Israeli troops were inching their way closer to the Al Shifa hospital, Gaza's biggest health facility. Listen to Jonathan Saul on today's Reuters World News podcast discussing Israel's military strategy.
- Palestinians should govern Gaza once Israel ends its war against Hamas, the US said, pushing back against Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu's idea that Israel would be responsible for security indefinitely.
| - For the third time, Donald Trump's rivals for the Republican presidential nomination took to the debate stage in his absence, seeking a way to dislodge the former president from his commanding lead in opinion polls. Here are the key takeaways from the debate.
- US Secretary of State Antony Blinken said he and South Korea's foreign minister Park Jin share "profound" concerns about the growing military cooperation between North Korea and Russia.
- After living in Pakistan for years, thousands of Afghans have gone into hiding to escape a government order to expel undocumented foreigners because they fear persecution under a Taliban administration in their homeland, rights activists say.
- In a sign of both the limitations and reach of Western sanctions in place since Moscow's invasion of Ukraine, some of Russia's rich and powerful are finding ways to keep personal jets airborne, Reuters reporting shows, but the restrictions have sharply curtailed where the planes can travel.
- Apart from a detailed peace plan to end Russia's invasion of Ukraine, President Volodymyr Zelenskiy has a less conventional idea for ending geopolitical crises: let dogs run the world. Speaking at the Reuters Next conference via videolink he joked that man's best friend might fare better when it comes to getting along on the global stage.

A defective drone in Iraq may have helped keep America from being dragged deeper into a widening Middle East conflict. The drone, which was launched at the Erbil air base by an Iranian-backed militia before sunrise on Oct. 26, penetrated US air defenses and crashed into the second floor of the barracks housing American troops at about 5 a.m., according to two US officials who asked to remain anonymous to speak freely about the attack. The explosive laden device failed to detonate and only one service member suffered a concussion from the impact.
The incident was among at least 40 separate drone and rocket attacks that have been launched at US forces by Iranian-backed militias in Iraq and Syria over the past three weeks in response to American support for Israel in the Gaza war, according to Pentagon data and the two US officials.

In the bowls and street skating ledges and rails of US skate parks, women and girls exude pride over their increasingly impressive skateboarding skills and say even the guys who have long dominated the sport are taking notice. At the 12th annual Exposure Skate competition this month in the California beach town of Encinitas, girls under 10 and in their teens were shredding. That's skateboard lingo for aggressive and skilled skating.
