WHAT’S BREWING

WHY PEOPLE LIE ABOUT 9/11 "Though actual victims of trauma often struggle to talk about their experiences, there is no lack of pretend survivors eager to tell their tales. False memoirists have written for years about drug addiction, child abuse and Holocaust survival. In one famous case, an American woman claimed to be a survivor of both the Holocaust and abuse by a Satanic cult." [WaPo]

WHAT'S WORKING

GET COLLEGE KIDS TO SCHOOL WITH A TEXT "Each summer, 20 to 30 percent of students in urban areas who have accepted a spot at a college fail to attend simply because they do not fill out forms or complete other administrative tasks, researchers have found. But simply sending students text messages with reminders, researchers discovered, boosted college enrollment by 3.1 percentage points overall and 8.6 percent among low-income students." [HuffPost]

ON THE BLOG

SENATOR FEINSTEIN: HELPING HOMELESS CHILDREN "Since 2006, there has been a 67 percent increase in the number of homeless children in this country. The recession pushed millions of families over the edge and many never recovered. Today, 2.5 million children in the United States under age 18 are without a permanent roof to live under -- more than ever before." [HuffPost]

WHY RISK A CHILD'S LIFE FOR A SANDWICH? "I see similar conversations play out again and again. Scared moms and dads beg their fellow parents to leave the peanut butter at home, while other parents refuse, saying, 'It's my right to feed my child what I want -- your child's health is not more important.' As if the risk of hunger-induced crankiness is the same as the risk of death." [HuffPost]
