U.S. STOCKS DROP, ALONG WITH HOPES FOR STABILITY "For most of Tuesday, U.S. stocks looked like they would rebound from a week of China-driven woe after Beijing cut interest rates and flooded its banking system with cash, but the Dow Jones Industrial Average gave up big early gains to tumble 1.3% in the final minutes of trading. The late-day selloff shattered the veneer of stability that had settled over global markets following the latest moves by China’s central bank to battle a deepening economic slowdown and its worst stock-market rout in decades." Here's why the crash has highlighted the previously hidden risks in the U.S. economy. And take a look at eight of the stocks that were shellacked. [WSJ]

WHAT’S BREWING

'THE MEANING OF SERENA WILLIAMS' "Serena’s grace comes because she won’t be forced into stillness; she won’t accept those racist projections onto her body without speaking back; she won’t go gently into the white light of victory. Her excellence doesn’t mask the struggle it takes to achieve each win." [NYT]

WHAT'S WORKING

THE CAMPAIGN FOR WOMEN-FRIENDLY MOSQUES "Whenever Muslim feminist Hind Makki sees photos of a stunning mosque, she wonders, 'Would there be an adequate place for me to pray?' For years, Muslim women activists like Makki have been calling attention to the state of women's prayer spaces in mosques. There's an incredible variety in America -- some mosques have beautiful prayer halls for women, while in other mosques, women are relegated to crowded basements or asked to watch the service on television from an overflow room." [HuffPost]

ON THE BLOG

'LOSING MY HUSBAND AT 24' "There are many lessons I take from his passing, but the biggest is that though we may feel invincible, we never know how much time we have left. Life is too short for outdated dogmas to impede our own pursuit of happiness." [HuffPost]
