- A US Army veteran flying an ISIS flag from his truck swerved around makeshift barriers and plowed into New Orleans' crowded French Quarter on New Year's Day, killing 15 people. - A Tesla Cybertruck exploded in flames outside the Trump International Hotel Las Vegas, killing the driver and injuring seven others. The FBI, which did not publicly identify the driver, is investigating whether the blast was an act of terrorism.
- A gunman who killed at least 10 people in a rampage in a small town in Montenegro died from self-inflicted injuries after attempting suicide. Police said the man, identified as Aleksandar Martinovic, had a history of illegal weapons possession.
- Russian gas exports via pipelines running through Ukraine came to a halt on New Year's Day, marking the end of decades of Moscow's dominance over Europe's energy markets. - South Korea's impeached President Yoon Suk Yeol has sent a letter rallying his supporters saying he would "fight until the end" as he faces an attempt by authorities to arrest him over his short-lived Dec. 3 martial law, a lawyer said.
- In more news from South Korea, local police raided Jeju Air and the operator of Muan International Airport as part of their investigation into Sunday's crash that killed 179 people in the worst aviation disaster on the country's soil.

- Nvidia emerged as the biggest global gainer in market capitalization for 2024, driven by surging interest in artificial intelligence and the robust demand for its AI-centric chips across various industries. The chipmaker's market value increased by over $2 trillion last year.
- Manufacturers in the euro zone ended last year on a sour note, with factory activity declining at a faster rate. The downturn was again broadbased with the bloc's three largest economies – Germany, France and Italy – stuck in an industrial recession.
