Donald Trump was indicted for his wide-ranging attempts to overturn the 2020 election, the third time in four months that the former US president has been criminally charged. Listen to Reuters World News as Joseph Ax tells us what we learnt from the indictment.
What happens next: Trump is set to make his first court appearance on Thursday, when prosecutors will outline the charges against him and a judge will set his bail conditions. He might enter a plea at that time, but his arraignment could also come at a later date. This graphic shows Trump's major legal woes.

SEVERE WEATHER

China dispatched thousands of rescue workers to Zhuozhou, a flooded city of over 600,000 residents, as the remnants of Typhoon Doksuri continued to wreak havoc. Zhuozhou is in Hebei province, which has borne the brunt of the worst storms to hit northern China in over a decade, killing least 20 people.
High winds hit power lines in Japan's popular tourist destination Okinawa, knocking out electricity to more than 200,000 households this morning, as powerful and slow-moving typhoon Khanun neared the country's southwestern islands. So far there has been one death reported and 11 people injured.

ELSEWHERE

Russia attacked Ukraine's grain ports, including an inland port across the Danube River from Romania, sending global food prices soaring as Moscow ramps up its use of force to reimpose a blockade of Ukrainian exports. There were no reports of casualties.
Niger announced overnight that it was reopening its borders with several of its neighbors, a week after a coup that has been condemned by foreign powers and raised fears of a wider conflict in West Africa's Sahel region. Here are the sanctions that have been imposed on Niger since the coup.
Thailand's election-winning Move Forward Party has been excluded from a coalition of parties hoping to form the next government after a May general election, parties in the alliance said. Southeast Asia's second largest economy has been in political limbo since the poll.

Rating agency Fitch downgraded the US government's top credit rating, a move that surprised investors, coming despite the resolution of the debt ceiling crisis two months ago. Seated with her legs stretched out on her living room floor, Vivian Tung scrunched her bare stomach to find a spot where she could inject Rekovelle, a hormonal medicine used to stimulate egg production. The 33-year-old had to inject herself daily over the two-week process it took to freeze her eggs.

Tung, who is single, is one of a rising number of women in Taiwan opting to freeze their eggs to give them the option to have a child later in life, even though under current laws they cannot use the eggs unless they marry.

A Dutch ultrarunner is running from Amsterdam to Kyiv to raise funds for charity and demonstrate how close the Ukraine war zone is to Western Europe. Boas Kragtwijk started on July 22 and plans to cover the 2,500 km by running around 50 km each day for 50 days. The aim is to raise money to buy ambulances that Dutch charity Zeilen van Vrijheid (Sails of Freedom) will take to Ukraine.
