The real college scandal. No Images? Click here The Creeping Capitalist Takeover
Hello Highliners, If, like me, you've been avidly following the sleazy machinations that (allegedly) got Olivia Jad Loughlin and other scions of Hollywood actors and private equity titans into elite colleges ... well, this piece won't make you feel any better about the gross inequities that have corrupted higher education. Here's the deal: As everyone knows, the cost of a college degree is high and only soaring higher. But a few years back, universities had a once-in-a-generation chance to bring those costs down—and chose not to take it. Instead of making college affordable for families who can't pay an SAT tutor or bribe a gymnastics coach, universities instead allowed a new species of for-profit company to hoover up all the savings and route a large chunk of the money to Facebook and Google. In the process of unraveling this infuriating history, Kevin Carey exposes the deeply warped economics of higher education and its corrosive consequences.
