TOP MILITARY ADVISOR: GROUND TROOPS NEXT If the airstrikes against ISIS prove to be ineffective, America's top general said yesterday he believes the next step for the U.S. would be to put boots on the ground in Iraq. ISIS released a Hollywood-esque video trailer response to the news, stating it would kill any American troops. President Obama heads to Central Command in Tampa today to evaluate all options for attacking ISIS, and the House will vote on financing the ongoing ISIS operation. [NYT]
$1 BILLION NEEDED TO FIGHT EBOLA According to the U.N., it will cost roughly $1 billion dollars to combat the epidemic. A Senate panel called for more assistance than President Obama has currently offered. Here's what the Ebola fight means for the U.S. military. And these 14 numbers break down the magnitude of the virus's deadly outbreak.
SCOTTISH REFERENDUM NEARS With a referendum for Scottish independence from the UK two days away, here are five reasons many will vote to break away from the union. And meet the man who "brought Scottish nationalism from the political fringes to what he has called 'the cusp of history.'"
UKRAINE CONTINUES EUROPEAN PIVOT "Ukraine sought to draw a line under its confrontation with Moscow by ratifying a landmark trade-and-political deal with the European Union and approving limited autonomy for territories now controlled by Russia-backed separatists. But with full implementation of the EU deal postponed under Russian pressure, and the rebels insisting on independence, the developments illustrated Kiev's weakened position—almost a year after Moscow began flexing its muscle to keep the ex-Soviet republic in its orbit." Russia is threatening to send more troops to Crimea in retaliation for ongoing NATO military exercises. [WSJ]
UNION TRIUMPH Following the merger of U.S. Airways and American Airlines, service employees successfully unionized. This follows a 2013 failure at American Airlines to unionize that lost by 150 votes. [HuffPost]
A DESPERATE JOURNEY ACROSS THE MEDITERRANEAN "Sometimes one of the migrants captains the boat. Whoever volunteers crosses for free. No experience required. They give him a compass, or if he's lucky, a GPS and satellite phone. Sometimes there's not enough fuel to make it all the way across. Other times, the smugglers take the vessel out to sea before jumping ship in a rubber boat, assuming the migrants will be rescued. It might be the deadliest border crossing on earth. Rickety boats traversing the Mediterranean Sea carry men, women and children, and even tiny newborns fleeing war, persecution and poverty in Africa and the Middle East." [Story, Image via WaPo]
HEALTHCARE.GOV STILL NOT UP TO SNUFF "HealthCare.gov has continuing security frailties that put users' sensitive personal information at risk, a government watchdog is set to tell Congress this week. Despite the federal government's efforts to protect the website from breaches, 'weaknesses remained in the security and privacy protections applied to HealthCare.gov and its supporting systems,' said the Government Accountability Office." NFL SPONSORS EXPRESS DISPLEASURE Many of the NFL's top sponsors publicly reprimanded the National Football League yesterday for its response to its players' violent behavior. As The New York Times states, "Anheuser-Busch has made a shocking discovery. The N.F.L., the company's money heifer over these many years, is a spectacularly violent league." And in a 180 degree turn from earlier this week, the Minnesota Vikings have "essentially deactivated" running back Adrian Peterson in light of his child abuse charges. [NYT]
